THE FUTURE

CALCASIEU CHANNEL
In the Calcasieu ship channel at Monkey Island in Cameron, Louisiana, dredging of the river (to 30 feet) will allow deepwater and ultra-deepwater oil and drilling companies to utilize offshore supply ships with drafts up to 25 feet while working in the oil and gas industry.  Cameron will become a deepwater port and absorb some of the deepwater traffic in Port of Fourchon; furthermore, it will lessen the travel time from Port Fourchon to deepwater/ultra-deepwater locations closest to Cameron and Galveston.  Offshore locations closest to the Port of Cameron and farther from Port Fourchon are in deepwater blocks: West Green Canyon, Garden Banks and East Breaks; Ultra-deepwater blocks are:  Walker Ridge, Keathley Canyon and Alaminos Canyon.

PANAMA CANAL
Widening of the Panama Canal will allow more ships from the Asian-Pacific and United States west coast ports to transit goods to/from ports in the NW Gulf region, starting in 2015, now, 2016 estimated.  This will change global shipping patterns.  Reportedly, “it will shift container traffic coming from Asia to West coast ports and the United States Intermodal system, to a new all-water route through the canal’s new set of wider locks and to East Coast and Gulf of Mexico ports.”

OVERVIEW
Deep-draft vessels will frequent the Calcasieu ship channel making port of calls in Cameron due to the port’s future deepwater passage and accommodations to the area.  GNW will be there to provide ship delivery assistance to vessels offshore within the ship channel anchorages, such as construction ships, idle drilling rigs and ATBs; also, inland anchorages for repairs, crew changes, grocery shopping and assist the NW Gulf Federal pilot(s) during pilotage duty.
